Specialist trauma and mental health support

Descendants of trauma survivors may suffer mental and physical health problems even though they did not experience the original traumatic event themselves.

What we do

There is much research into trans-generational (or intergenerational) trauma, which refers to the psychological, behavioural, and biological effects of trauma that are passed down from survivors to subsequent generations.

For many of our Second and Third generation members, coping with the psychological effects of being the descendants of holocaust survivors has taken its toll.

Common symptoms include:

  • Unexplained anxiety, depression, and chronic stress.
  • Heightened alarm systems (hypervigilance) and exaggerated startle responses.
  • Feelings of mistrust, grief, or a persistent sense of impending doom.
  • Attachment or relationship difficulties.
  • Somatic complaints or physical health issues linked to long-term stress.

If you are struggling with these kinds of issues, it may be hard to know who to approach for professional specialist help. The AJR has created this guide to therapists who are trained and experienced in working with people experiencing trans-generational trauma.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and the AJR does not personally recommend any of these therapists. We strongly recommend that you check with anyone on the list that they have appropriate experience and qualifications to meet your needs prior to commencing therapy.

“We really appreciated the financial help which allowed mum to stay in her home until the end.”

Second Generation Member

The generation that survived Nazi persecution
should never face hardship in later life.

If you or a loved one came to the UK as a victim of Nazi persecution, support may be available now. Contact the AJR to ensure no Holocaust refugee or survivor is left without the help they deserve.
