Is there a particular place or building in Britain that is important to your family’s history? If so here is your opportunity to make sure it’s never forgotten.
Every refugee’s story is unique, but together those stories create a remarkable history. The UK Holocaust Map (www.ukholocaustmap.org.uk) preserves that history by bringing together the people, places and events that shaped the lives of Jewish refugees before, during and after their arrival in Britain.
The map, created by the AJR in partnership with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, allows users to
explore hundreds of locations connected with refugee experiences – from family homes, schools and synagogues to hostels,
businesses, places of work and sites of remembrance. It also links to photographs, documents, oral histories and archive
collections, making it an invaluable resource for families, researchers, schools and anyone interested in the history of Jewish refugees.
The project is a living resource that continues to grow as new information is added. So we would very much value any new stories, updates and corrections. Perhaps you know a building that isn’t yet included? Or maybe you have a story about one of the places that is already included? Even small details can help make it more accurate, more comprehensive and more valuable for historians, descendants and educators alike. We urge you to look especially at the section called Tell us More, which contains 70+ stories that we would especially love to know more about.
