Having a volunteer visitor
Many of our members enjoy the company of an AJR volunteer.
Whether you would like someone to chat with over a cup of tea, enjoy a walk together, or visit a coffee shop, our volunteers are here to offer companionship and connection.
Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and are carefully selected, trained and supported by the AJR. They understand the importance of listening with kindness, respecting your independence, and building a relationship at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
What can a volunteer do?
Every situation is different, but your volunteer might:
- Visit you at home for a chat over tea or coffee
- Accompany you for a short walk or to a local café
- Share interests such as books, music, films or current affairs
- Play a board game or look through photographs together
- Help you feel more connected and less isolated
- Simply spend time with you and provide regular companionship
Visits are arranged at a time that suits both you and your volunteer, usually weekly or fortnightly.
We take time to get to know both our members and our volunteers. We consider personalities, interests, location and preferences so that we can create a comfortable and enjoyable match.
Our Volunteer Team will stay in touch and is always available if you have any questions or concerns.

Please complete the form and one of our team will be in touch to arrange a volunteer visitor.
“My client arrived on the Kindertransport as a small child. Her husband passed away many years ago, and she does not have children. I visit her each week and we talk about current affairs over coffee and cake, and quite often we go out for lunch together. She recently told me that she had forgotten that I was her volunteer and referred to me as her friend! That’s why I love being a volunteer for AJR.”
